PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

With spring upon is, TDA is itself blossoming. We have some exciting events planned for the next few months -- from lobbying our state representatives in support of menu labeling legislation, to lectures and even a Jazzercise fundraiser to support cancer survivors. We may even throw in a walk in the woods for our members interested in combining nature and networking while talking about how our diets relate to the world around us.

The Tallahassee Dietetic Association continues to be the professional organization of note for our local professionals. TDA serves as a resource for non-profits and educational institutions looking to have dietetics educators present at health fairs and the like. Several times per year, our members staff informational booths in this capacity. And several times per year we receive requests for nutritional counseling services or for media requests for interviews.

Our membership looks forward to the day that dietitians will fulfill our most meaningful role as key players in disease prevention. Let's see how the healthcare debate unfolds... and let's try to actively help shape it toward a more prevention-oriented model!

It's been a pleasure serving as TDA president this year.

Sincerely,
June Wiaz, MS RD/LD

SPOTLIGHT DIETITIAN
Andrea Farmer, MS, RD, LD/N

Andrea Farmer, our TDA Treasurer, has been a Registered Dietitian in the Tallahassee area for the past 30 years!  She is also a Certified Personal Trainer and Jazzercise Instructor who has taught exercise classes for over 18 years.  Andrea received her undergraduate degree from Douglass College in New Jersey, completed a dietetic internship, also in New Jersey, and obtained her Master’s degree from Florida State University.  After working in a variety of settings ranging from clinical dietetics to food service management to private practice to education, she recently joined the Florida Department of Health as a Compliance Specialist for the Child Care Food Program.  As a member of the Field Operations Headquarters staff, she coordinates and tracks some of the monitoring activities of the field personnel who make sure that day care centers and their sponsors comply with Child Care Food Program regulations.  It is a very interesting position that utilizes the wide variety of skills she has developed in many different settings.  In her free time, Andrea enjoys spending time with her family and dogs, exercising, singing, reading, and scrap booking.

Quote:  “I believe that, at all ages, a healthy diet and exercise are the two most important lifestyle factors leading to overall health and well-being”.

Congratulations to our new TDA Officers for 2009-2010.
